Jaryl Tan Wencong, 19, committed 11 offences of living off prostitution earnings and helping to manage two operations in Geylang and a flat in District 9. He admitted two charges: helping to run the brothel in Chateau Eliza in Mount Elizabeth; and meeting a Thai woman at Changi Airport, knowing she was procured for prostitution here.
Yesterday, Community Court Judge Lim Keng Yeow accepted the recommendations of a probation officer and placed Tan on 18 months' probation. He is the second out of three men to be tried in relation to the case. Co-accused Cheng Wei Guang, 22, was given nine months' jail in November last year.
Six Thai passports and a photocopy of another passport were found in their possession. Investigations found that the seven Thai women were working for a vice syndicate operated by a man known only as David. The women, whose photos were put online, would wait for clients in their room. Tan and Cheng were tasked with assisting in managing the brothel and collecting the women's earnings. Tan began working for the syndicate on June 25 last year but did not receive any salary as he was under "training", investigations found.
On July 1, Tan and Cheng met the year-old Thai woman at the airport and took her to the condominium where she would stay and provide sexual services. Tan must perform hours of community service and observe a curfew. This article was first published on January 6, Get a copy of The Straits Times or go to straitstimes.
